The Jaunt: Mike Perry

Amsterdam-based Gallery 33 is exhibiting The Jaunt's latest excursion with the prolific and colourful Mike Perry. Having travelled to Antwerp and stayed for a week to soak up the culture and the language, he is back in force to exhibit the prints created during his stay abroad, as well as a number of other works and pieces in all the colours and media of the rainbow!See below for Dutch.
The idea behind The Jaunt is fairly straightforward: find a brilliant artist and send them to an inspiring spot somewhere on the face of the planet – space exploration is a future development they hope to reach at some point. The artist is dropped for a short week to find inspiration and to create an adventure-inspired artwork which is then produced as a limited edition screen print. To make it even more interesting, the prints are only sold at sight unseen, before the trip takes place. You know which artist is going to which location, but the result remains a surprise for everybody involved.
This time around, however, it went a little different, as Mike Perry, ever prolific, chose instead to create a print run before leaving which he added to and personalized throughout his stay, creating instead of one print, fifty original artworks.
Recognizable through his use of colours to create an almost iridescent atmosphere in his work, Mike remains no less varied in media, style, and subject matter. He continues to impress upon the viewer an unadulterated sense of enjoyment, freedom and fantasy as he guides your eyes through colourful patterns and friendly landscapes. Moving in on the 5th of September, Mike will deck out the gallery space in prints, designs and illustrations from his prolific and prismatic artistic career, and stay for one week, ending his show on the 12th of September, to leave us wanting more.

Het idee achter The Jaunt is eigenlijk heel simpel: vind een briljante kunstenaar en zend hem naar een inspirerende plek hier ergens op de wereld. De kunstenaar verblijft een korte week op zijn bestemming om een door zijn omgeving geïnspireerd kunstwerk te maken dat vervolgens verkocht zal worden als een limited edition screen print. Alsof dit concept nog niet interessant genoeg is wordt er nog een draai aan het The Jaunt gegeven: de prints worden op voorhand verkocht, nog voordat de kunstenaar aan zijn reis is begonnen! Je weet dus welke kunstenaar naar welk oord wordt gestuurd, maar het resultaat blijft een verassing voor iedereen tot op de avond van een opening.
Deze editie besloot illustrator Mike Perry het echter een tikkeltje anders aan te pakken. Hij heeft voor zijn vertrek een print uitgekozen, die hij heeft aangepast en gepersonaliseerd heeft gedurende zijn verblijf in Antwerpen. Het resultaat is niet één print maar vijftig originele werken!
Herkenbaar door zijn opvallend kleurgebruik die hij inzet om zo een bijna magische en speelse sfeer te creëren, blijft Mike gevarieerd in gebruik van media, stijl en keuze van onderwerp. Het lukt hem telkens opnieuw om de kijker een onbegrensd gevoel van plezier, vrijheid en fantasie te bezorgen als hij je meeneemt op een visuele reis van kleurrijke patronen en vriendelijke landschappen. Vanaf 5 september zal Mike de galerie een week lang omgetoverd zijn met prints, designs en illustraties uit zijn bewonderenswaardige artistieke carriere. Zorg ervoor dat je er snel bij bent want op 12 september zal de expositie al weer eindigen.
Niet getreurd echter, want om 18 september zijn we weer terug met een expositie over Omnipollo, de Zweedse bierbrouwerij van Henok Fentie en Karl Grandin. Niet alleen zal er bier geschonken worden dat speciaal is ontworpen voor de opening, ook zal de galerie dankzij het indrukwekkende artwork van Karl omgetoverd worden in een ruimte vol wonderen.
